When to Start Yoga After Having a Baby

postpartum Jul 31, 2023

YES, you can do yoga again before your 6-week postpartum checkup!!

Everybody calm down! I’m not a doctor! But I’m about to make a really good point.

Listen, if you just, like, lay in bed for 6 weeks, and then go to your OB for that 6-week check up and they’re like, “Okay good to go!”--are you gonna go run a marathon the next day?

NO, YOU’RE NOT. Everyone knows that would be ridiculous.

Also, who’s really laying in bed literally all day every day for 6 weeks? No! We’re taking care of a baby, we’re walking around, if you have another kid, you’re running around!

So that’s my point about the lack of magic in that 6-week appointment.

But let’s talk about yoga. (Ooh, I’m excited!)

Yoga is so versatile.

Breathing exercises are yoga.

Gentle stretching is yoga.

Handstands are yoga.

Can you guess which of those three are good to go for pre-6-week checkup?

Honestly, there’s so much yoga you can do, even an hour after your baby is born. But I know it can be a little overwhelming or unsettling to figure out what to do. So I’ve taken care of that for you.

I’ve got a few things I think you’ll like:

  1. “I Just Gave Birth” Mini Sessions – Normally I offer 1-hr private sessions, but this is a little different. There are four 15-minute sessions to use within your first 4ish weeks postpartum. You can literally text me the day your baby’s born and be like, “Hey, can we talk tonight?” We’ll hop on a quick Facetime, you can be in your mesh panties or WHATEVER, and I’ll guide you through really gentle but meaningful stuff to start your road to recovery.
  2. On-Demand Classes – Have you checked out the on-demand library yet? My favorite classes on this topic are The “I Just Gave Birth” Yoga Class and Yoga for Breastfeeding. // So if you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy, or if you’re already in that early postpartum phase, you know where to find me!

And I’d so appreciate if you’d pass this blog post on to a friend who might benefit from it.

What do you wish you had had in those early postpartum days? Help someone else have a positive experience!
